Dylan Martorell (1971), Melbourne based artist and musician, is not a new face on the Nieves catalogue. After his first Zine New Releases in 2005, Nieves now presents a catalogue with works from Martorell’s solo show The Infinights at Someday Gallery in Melbourne.
The inspiration for the book was a series of autobiographical writings by 16th –19th centuries’ explorers and travellers. This led to the idea of creating an imagined history of a sect of night sky worshipers called the ‘Infinights’. This group had something in their cosmology akin to the song lines of the Australian Aborigines where they have a tradition of mapping musical paths between the stars.
Martorell defines his working style as ‘stream of unconsciousness meets primordial smoke machine’. He has been exhibiting and performing for over ten years both within Australia and internationally, as a solo artist and with his musical projects, Snawklor and Hi God People. In 2006, Hi God People supported Sonic Youth during their Melbourne show. He also collaborated with magazines like +81, Dazed and Confused and Tokion, and with companies like Vitra and P.A.M.
